How to Make Abstract Art: 4 Tips

April 10, 2024      Tami      Leave a Comment

If you’ve looked at my Etsy shop, you can probably tell that when it comes to paintings, I mostly prefer doing cutesy, cartoony paintings haha.

But I’ve been wanting to try my hand at abstract art for a while now!

I always love seeing different cute and colorful abstract paintings on Instagram. Or the more dark and moody ones.

The other day, I thought I’d finally try to make abstract art. So I sat down to paint, and let me be honest with you: it’s harder than you probably think it is.

My first attempt at an abstract painting is definitely not that great, but I did learn a few things from it. And I can’t wait to try again!

But for today, I thought I’d share what I learned. (:

Here are 4 simple tips to help you make abstract art!

Abstract art can seem harder than you might think. But here are 4 simple tips on how to create abstract art!

1- There’s no wrong way to do it

[su_quote]ab·stract:

“existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence.”[/su_quote]

By definition, abstract things don’t have a certain “look” to them. So, there’s no wrong way to make abstract art. Everyone is different, everyone has different feelings and emotions, and styles. So don’t be worried about messing anything up or not doing it right. Just do what feels right to you.

2- Use your feelings

When it comes to other types of art, we get caught up in making sure everything looks accurate or realistic. Abstract art isn’t about that. So, use your feelings instead. Choose colors and strokes and textures that fit your emotions. Let your feelings guide you more.

3- Try different mediums

A lot of people (myself included) are intimidated by creating abstract paintings. But abstract art doesn’t have to mean abstract painting. You can also create an abstract drawing or collage. If painting is an intimidating or unappealing activity to you, try another medium.

4- Just let go

More than anything else, just let go. When you’re creating abstract artwork, try unconventional methods. Give yourself permission to play around and let loose. Do something unexpected. Try painting with your eyes closed or using your non-dominant hand. Do things you wouldn’t normally do and see what happens. Let your creativity run wild!

Have you ever tried to make abstract art? Do you want to? What’s your best tip? I’d love to see your thoughts in the comments below!
