A lot of people just plow through life aimlessly, with no goals or ambitions.
That’s a pretty sad way to live because it might make you feel like you lack purpose in the world – even if you don’t.
And some people have goals, but they aren’t specific – or maybe even realistic. They aren’t true goals, they’re just wishes and dreams.
While there’s nothing wrong with being a dreamer, if you want to actually achieve your dreams, setting goals can help.
Very few people actually have clear goals with actionable steps, written down on paper. And doing this simple step can mean the difference between a goal-setter and a goal-getter. (:
I always write my goals down on paper, along with the steps that I need to take to achieve them.
I also review my goals regularly and revise them whenever I need to.
Today I’m sharing 7 reasons why writing down your goals increases your chances of accomplishing them!
– It will help you be more clear about what you want.
Obviously, if you’re writing down your goals then you have to put them into words, which makes the goals more specific. It forces you to be more clear about exactly what it is that you want to achieve. Plus, seeing all of the steps that you need to take to achieve that goal will help you see exactly what you should be doing to reach it.
– It will help you get committed to the process.
It’s one thing to just think about all the things we want to do: write a book, lose weight, be more outgoing, etc. But it’s quite another thing to actually write these things down. Writing down your goals forces you to take the next step toward achieving them. It allows you to put more thought into them and even another step further by making plans to get them done.
– It will help you keep them in mind.
Our goals and dreams can be fleeting, especially if we get distracted. Sometimes we have 35,383 things going on and we don’t always remember every single thing we’re meaning to do. Writing down all of your goals daily, weekly, monthly, and/or yearly, can help you with this problem. This will also get rid of the clutter in your brain to help you focus better without having to remember all of the things you want or need to do.
– It will help hold you accountable.
Obviously, if you just think of a goal and then just let it set on the back burner, you’re way more likely to just forget about it. But if you write the goal down and constantly review it, you’re more likely to hold yourself accountable. If you see that there is something you should have done and you haven’t done it yet, you’re forced to face it and it gives you more of a sense of responsibility.
– It will help keep you motivated.
When you write down your goals and have them in front of you, it makes you feel more motivated to take action toward them. Whenever I look through my bullet journal, I see my goals written down. If I notice there are things I haven’t done yet, that’s usually what motivates me to start getting things done. Just make sure that you write down your goals somewhere that you’ll see them frequently. The satisfaction you’ll feel as you get closer to achieving them is ah-mazing.
– It will help you stay on track.
Again, if you regularly review your goals, this will help you stay on track toward achieving them. When you sit down to review them and you see that there’s something that you forgot to do or need to get done, you’ll be way more likely to actually do it than you would’ve been if you hadn’t reviewed your goals. If you had just kept your goals in the abyss of your mind, you would be more likely to forget about them.
– It will help you see and track your progress.
Sometimes, when we don’t clearly see the progress that we’re making toward something, we get discouraged. This happens even if we are making progress. If you’re just trusting yourself to remember your goals, you can’t track your progress. But when you write them down, you have a chance to visually see how far you’ve come. This will be more encouraging for you and you’ll have a better chance of sticking with them until they’re accomplished. (You should also reward yourself for reaching milestones!)
