Hi friends! I have a smaller post today, but I thought it would be fun to talk about this. 🙂
I’m someone who likes to change up my appearance a lot. I like to dye my hair, get new tattoos, and change up my style a little bit.
I think that it’s fun to be creative with the way you look and express yourself through your appearance.
Whether you’re more feminine or masculine, sweet or edgy, formal or casual – your appearance is an opportunity to say something about your personality and your interests.
So, today I thought I’d share 5 simple ways to express yourself through your appearance!
1- Your makeup (or lack of it)
Some people think that makeup is just used to cover up imperfections – which could be partially true. But it can be so much more than that. Many people use makeup as a form of art. Use colors you like, apply things the way you like. Or if makeup isn’t your thing, don’t feel pressured to wear any at all!
I like big winged eyeliner because my eyes are the feature that I’m most confident about. I also like going bold with my lips because I like adding kind of an edge to my look. Other than that, I don’t usually wear anything else. There’s nothing wrong with doing what works for YOU.
2- Clothes that speak to you
I’m gonna get real here and I don’t mean to offend anyone but: it seems like almost everyone I see dresses exactly the same. Trends are everything to some people. If you want to express yourself through your appearance, you should wear clothes that speak to YOU and not just what you see influencers wearing.
Of course, sometimes trends will speak to you. But what you wear is the biggest chance you have to express yourself through your appearance. So wearing what you’re personally drawn to is so much more fun. 90% of the time you see me, I’m just wearing edgy leggings and t-shirts with my interests on them.
3- Body mods (or a lack of them)
Body mods aren’t as unusual as they were 20+ years ago, but they’re still a great way to express yourself. I always joke around that it seems like it’s becoming more unique and edgy to have NO tattoos or piercings than it is to be fully tatted, haha.
But as with everything else on this list, it’s all about what you’re drawn to. I have an always-growing collection of tattoos and a few piercings. Workplaces are accepting things like this more and more too. Just put some real thought into what you do first!
4- Your hair (color and style)
Hair is an extra fun way to express yourself, in my opinion. When you change your hair, sometimes it can change your appearance so much that you look almost like a new person. There are almost limitless options from shaving your head to wearing extensions, from blonde to pink to black.
I’m someone who has had pretty much every hair color and style imaginable. As I said, it’s just so fun to change things up with your hair whenever you feel like it. And if you don’t like your new look, it always grows back and colors always fade away!
5- Details and accessories
Smaller details and accessories are another way to express yourself. Jewelry, handbags, shoes, nails, hair accessories.
If you’re someone who likes to keep it more simple with your hair/makeup/clothes, accessories are the perfect way to be more fun and playful.
Like I’ve said a million times in this post: it’s all about what works for you! 😊

I love expressing myself through my clothes and hair. I am a leopard and purple hair kind of person.
That’s awesome! I’m definitely a leopard and purple hair person too! 🙂
I love being able to express myself and see how others do it too. There are so many beautiful and amazing styles out there.
Me too, I love seeing how different people choose to express themselves! 💖
I love the details and accessories. I love expressing myself by adding accessories like earrings and rings
This is a great roundup of the ways we express our personality through appearance. I feel like I lost a little of this when I had kids (stopped wearing jewelry that the baby would tug at), and it would be nice to dress up a little more.
I tend to express myself through my clothes and hair. I don’t have any tattoos yet!
My favorite ways were hair color, tats, and clothing. Now that I am gray, I don’t color anymore, my tats have faded and I am struggling with my clothing choices in my 60s. Sigh.
I love getting my nails done in a french tip style and to accessorize with silver jewelry. Thanks for sharing!
Expressing ourselves through appearance is so important. I lvoe using accessories to reflect my mood
I like how you gave so many examples and reminded us that it has to be what works for us! My daughter has several lovely tattoos and has had pink, blue, and platinum hair. I love that she likes to express herself like that, but I’m equally glad that my other two daughters are true to themselves. I’m happy being a Plain Jane- no make-up, and comfortable clothes and shoes only.
Sometimes expressing ourselves is really hard, thanks for sharing this to us! This is so helpful
These are all really great ways to express our selves! These will help me a lot Thanks for sharing!
